What is solar energy?
Solar energy or solar power is the power obtained by harnessing the energy of the sun’s rays. This energy is mobilized by using ever-evolving technologies like solar heating, photovoltaic, solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten salt power plants and artificial photosynthesis.
Why switch to solar energy?

What is the meaning of PV?

PV stands for photovoltaic. Photovoltaic (PV) is the direct conversion of solar energy into electrical energy. The term ‘photovoltaic’ is made up of the word ‘photo’ – the Greek word for light – and ‘volta’ – after Alessandro Volta, a pioneer in electro-technology (‘photovoltaic effect’). A photovoltaic cell (PV cell) is a specialized semiconductor diode that converts visible light into direct current (DC). Some PV cells can also convert infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) radiation into DC electricity.

It is the technology that comprises of solar panels that convert sunlight to electricity. A typical Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system consists of solar panels, each having a number of solar cells, which generate electrical power by converting light into electricity using semiconducting materials. Solar PV installations may be mounted on the ground, roof-tops or walls.

How does a solar system work?

First the sun’s rays fall on the solar panels that make energy from the sun’s radiation. This energy is collected by the solar panels in the form of DC a current. This DC current is the same as used in your automobile batteries. This current is passed to an inverter which converts the DC electricity to AC. This AC current is the same as found in your home.

What is net – metering?

Your rooftop solar pv system, which is connected to the grid can work on net metering basis, wherein you pay to the utility on net meter reading basis only, that is, for the net energy consumption after deducting energy generated from the plant.

What affects the energy output of my solar system?

Many factors affect the energy output of a solar system. It is mainly dependent on the size of the system. The larger the system, the more energy the system creates. Secondly, factors such as weather and climate in the area where it is installed, affect the amount of energy the system creates. How much electricity will my 1.0 kW system generate?

A 1.0 kWp system can generate on an average 4 – 5 units of electricity in a single day under ideal conditions.

What maintenance is required?

As Solar systems have no moving parts they are almost maintenance free. The panels should be kept free from dust, leaves, bird droppings and any other obstructions that might block the sunlight. After installation, you will be given instructions regarding the system.

What happens during monsoons?

The solar system will work even during the rainy season. The only difference is that the amount of sunlight will be less than on an ideal sunny day.

What happens at night?

The Solar PV System stops producing electricity and the system switches over to grid based power. Only customers who install battery powered systems can receive power from the batteries which would have been charged during the day time. This facility can be availed only for off – grid Solar PV Systems.

What happens during a power cut in my area?

During a power cut the inverter uses a feature called ‘anti-islanding’ which shuts down the electricity generation from the Solar PV System which acts as a protective measure that ensures the safety of the grid service people that are working to fix the problem.

Are your systems resistant to extreme weather conditions?

Solar panels are designed to withstand exposure and extreme weather including rain and strong winds. You will find that solar panels are actually more resistant to heavy weather than many roof tiles.

How effective is a solar system in terms of value for money?
India is world famous for its sunny climate; however we do not always use the abundance of sunlight that nature has bestowed upon us. Sunlight is a natural, clean energy resource and once you pay the initial outlay for the solar system to be installed; all the electricity generated by your solar system is absolutely free. Your solar system lifespan is over 25 years so imagine how much it could reduce your household running costs over this time.
How much money will I save?

How much money you save depends on a number of factors like:

Are there other benefits of installing solar pv systems?

Yes, by reducing India’s dependency on electricity generated from coal, we not only reduce CO² emissions, we also reduce the demand on water that power companies require to generate this electricity. Currently billions of litres of drinking water is used just to generate coal-based electricity.

Furthermore, if more Indians installed solar panel systems it will reduce the stress on our electricity grid. This in turn will minimize the number of blackouts occurring during times of peak electricity use.
